On October 15 & 16, 2025, the Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation (OFNTSC) will host a two-day National STEM Summit for Indigenous youth in Toronto through its Technical Youth Career Outreach Project (TYCOP). The event aims to empower Indigenous youth in grades 9 - 12 by showcasing diverse technical STEM career pathways, while highlighting the deep connections between science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), and traditional Indigenous knowledge.
The Summit will feature Indigenous STEM experts and youth, motivational speakers, and a tradeshow with educational institutions, career opportunities, and resources for Indigenous youth interested in STEM. Presentation topics will range from sports as a pathway to STEM, Canada’s critical minerals in modern technology, reclaiming wellness in housing and education, amplifying Indigenous voices in architecture, careers in firefighting and fire safety, protecting Indigenous water rights, and much more.
“Our relationship with the land has always made us scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians since time immemorial,” said Melanie Debassige, Executive Director of the OFNTSC. “This Summit is about reminding our youth that STEM is not something new to us – it is part of who we are. These careers are not only accessible and achievable, but they build on the knowledge and strengths our communities have always carried.”
Adding humour and energy to the event will be Master of Ceremonies, Eagle Blackbird. With over 1.2 million followers on TikTok, Eagle connects effortlessly with youth to engage their curiosity about careers in STEM.
The Technical Youth Career Outreach Project (TYCOP) encourages Indigenous youth to study and pursue careers in science and technology by showcasing the personal, professional, community and global benefits of education attainment. Career choices in STEM help to create future capacity in fields that are vital to Indigenous sustainability and self-determination.
